2018 Advent Devotional

In the beginning, God was present. Long before our world began, God’s Presence was there.  One day, God’s Presence hovered over the depths and gazed upon the world’s unformed substance and spoke the words of life into the dark and chaotic mess, “Let there be light!” The Spoken Word came forth from the Divine Presence, and all we have ever known came into being.

“Light” takes many forms. It is a “thing,” defined by the laws of physics. It can be painted by using lighter colors of the palette. It is metaphor, symbolizing brightness and goodness. It is a contrast with “darkness” and evil. One can think of examples of all of these.

When you have read the final devotion contained herein, take some time to contemplate the form of light that emerges for you. That form may be malleable, changing shapes and representation as time passes. Seek other references to “light” in the Bible, in literature. See how “light” is reflected in your life. You will read words, but let the words live within you.

May the light transform your life and the lives that you touch during the coming year, and may God bless you.
